Greetings and salutations!
How are you today?
While I was still in Florida last week, Wednesday to be precise, a friend sent me a set of texts: “Listening to The Itsy Bitsy Spider — But think of the sun coming out as Jesus — You might have a poem from this”.
I responded with the eloquent response of “*cough cough…* say what? (Literally how my brain took that in and I coughed for real trying to respond.)
Now if you read my last post about the need ‘to process’ my time in Florida, then you may wonder ‘did he jump at the new opportunity for a poem?’
I did not. I could not think past how I would get home with the $166 or so in the bank and the $50 in my wallet. (Side note: God is so extravagant in His provision that He took care of me and I learned a few things in the process, so win for God!)
Anyways, on Sunday I realized I did have the thought from my friend and the first part of The Itsy Bitsy Spider stuck in my brain. It rattled around and around, a pinball to the synapses of my thoughts.
So, I walked away and threw the pen down. Oh no, not that extreme! I got my notebook and a pen to begin to write. The poem below became the result.
The Son Rises “The Itsy Bitsy Spider Went up the water spout Down came the rain And washed the spider out.” Up came the Son To comfort the little spider, A depth of Beauty to all life, To uphold and guide her~ Oh, the Son Rises For in the Kingdom of Heaven He went the distance To draw Creation to Himself, A tantalized sensation Of utmost importance For His Blood to cleanse Heaven and Earth In Totality. ~Selah~ ~By: A.J. Quite the result, eh?
But, what do you mean by ‘found poetry’ in the title?
Well, thank you for asking anonymous!
Found Poetry:
Found poetry is a type of poetry created by taking words, phrases, and sometimes whole passages from other sources and reframing them. (Wikipedia)
The literary equivalent of a collage, found poetry is often made from newspaper articles, street signs, graffiti, speeches, letters, or even other poems. (Poets.org)
Basically found poetry takes words you see in everyday life and utilizes them in a new arrangement to form a poem. Granted most ‘found poetry’ utilizes all outside words rearranged to create the new poem. Mine above only uses the beginning point of The Itsy Bitsy Spider.
Either way it can be fun to take words already known and seen and play with them to create something new and different. Signs and billboards on a long drive can be advantageous for sure as I have written a few from them in the past.
What words do you see around you in your surroundings that you could put into a poem or message?
**A found poem can draw you in much as a sunrise or sunset on the coast does.
May the Lord of all Creation shine upon you and uphold you! May He comfort you and bring Light into dark places, comfort into brokenness, and joy into every aspect of your life!
Blessings to you all!
